| New Delhi, the capital city of India is a delight for visitors as it offers a bit of both worlds -- the new emerging India and the city’s hoary past that goes back several centuries. A tour around Delhi could introduce you to some historical and heritage sites like the Qutab Minar, Red Fort, Jantar-mantar, India Gate, Lotus Temple and the Old Fort to name just a few. Besides, there are beautiful gardens, museums, art galleries and shopping to explore. All you have to do is ask one of our guest service representatives for assistance in arranging a tour. |

Delhi, the capital of India before and after independence has perhaps seen more history than any other city in India. The co-existence of the past and the present at many levels characterizes Delhi, as it does India.
Delhi was built on the ruins of seven cities. The Tomar Rajputs built Lal Kot, the first of the seven cities. Qutub-ud-din Aibak, captured the city in 1206; this was the beginning of a Muslim rule of six and a half centuries. Allaudin Khilji established Siri the second city in 1311. He had an enormous reservoir dug at Hauz Khas, which can still be seen to this day. The Tughlaqabad Fort, built in 1321 became the third city. The fort still stands, most of it in ruins. Jahanpanah, the fourth city has virtually disappeared. Firoz Shah Kotla, the fifth city provides the backdrop for international cricket tournaments, played at the Kotla Grounds. In 1526, Babar founded the Mughal Empire and Purana Quila or the Old Fort came up as the sixth city. The Mughals ruled until 1857. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan built Delhi’s seventh city Shahjahanabad known as “Old Delhi” today. Finally in 1920, the British built New Delhi in a grandiose style and made it the capital of the country. There are two Delhi’s today -- ‘New’ Delhi and ‘Old’ Delhi. |
